Liszt: Soirées de Vienne No. 3

Today’s post is one of the lesser-played among Liszt’s Soirées de Vienne.  All nine of these pieces are as delightful as you can imagine—full of color, virtuosity, and unforgettable melody.  No. 6 was made famous by Rosenthal and Horowitz of course, but it’s a shame that the others are not played once in a while also!

The Soirées de Vienne are wonderful pieces for the experienced virtuoso—but what if you love Schubert’s music but don’t have the mean chops that Liszt requires from the pianist?  No problem!  Look up Schubert’s originals.  The best are:

Walzer, Ländler und Ecossaisen, D.145

Originaltänze, D.365

Wiener Damen-Ländler, D.734

Valses sentimentales, D.779

18 Deutsche und Ecossaisen, D.783

12 Valses nobles, D.969

If you are an amateur (or professional) pianist, looking for some new, lighter repertoire to dig into, I highly recommend checking these pieces out.  You won’t regret it!
